A learnership is a work-based programme that mixes theory with practical experience and leads to a nationally recognised qualification Learnerships are registered with a Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA), and unemployed learners are paid a monthly stipend. For many young South Africans, a learnership is a first step into a career.
How SETA learnerships work
SETAs are funded by employer skills levies They support employers and accredited training providers, who then recruit learners In most cases you apply to the employer or provider, not to the SETA itself.
Duration and stipend
- Most learnerships run for 12 months. Technical programmes can take 18 to 24 months.
- Typical stipends are R3,500 to R6,000 per month, depending on the sector and NQF level.
- Stipends change between intakes, so always confirm the amount in the advert.
